FirstMoves – Podcast: how do you turn cutting-edge research into a medical device that could change lives?

In July, we’re joined by Christian J.F. Bertens, co-founder and CEO of PEYEONEER Ophthalmic Solutions, a startup developing a novel implant to treat glaucoma, one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide. Christian shares the realities of building a medtech company from the ground up: assembling the right team, navigating regulations, and designing a product surgeons will actually want to use.

Before founding PEYEONEER, Christian was deeply involved in academic research on topical drug delivery systems. A major clinical trial he worked on didn’t go as planned, but it taught him hard lessons that ultimately shaped his approach to innovation, entrepreneurship, and patient impact.

We also explore what makes glaucoma so difficult to treat, how PEYEONEER is creating a simpler surgical solution, and what it takes to bring new ideas into hospitals, without losing momentum or mission along the way.
