Pioneering vision-saving innovation
Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, affecting more than 112 million people. Often called the “silent thief of sight,” glaucoma progresses slowly and many patients only realize its impact when vision loss is already advanced. Despite the availability of current treatments, 10% of patients still lose vision in both eyes, while 25% lose vision in one eye.
PEYEONEER Ophthalmic Solutions is committed to changing this. Originating from a research project funded by the Chemelot Institute for Science and Technology (InSciTe), our work brought together scientists and companies from multiple countries. Together, we developed a novel glaucoma implant made from a unique biocompatible material.
Today, PEYEONEER is driving the effort to bring this innovation to patients worldwide. Our mission is to provide safer and more effective treatment options for glaucoma, making surgery more reliable and preserving vision.
Challenge
The most effective method to lower IOP is bleb-forming glaucoma surgery. In this procedure, an alternative drainage pathway is created to allow fluid to exit the eye and thereby reduce IOP. While effective, surgery is often postponed due to the risk of severe, vision-threatening complications and a relatively high failure rate. Excessive scar tissue formation in the bleb remains a key challenge, leading to an average failure rate of approximately 10% per year.
Solution
Since the late 1980s, glaucoma drainage devices (GDDs) have been developed to support bleb formation. However, little true innovation has occurred since, particularly for the larger drainage devices. This has left a significant unmet need for new solutions that can ensure safer and more reliable outcomes. At PEYEONEER, we aim to close this gap with the development of the GlaucomaRING: an innovative implant made from a biocompatible polymer designed to minimize scarring and optimize bleb formation. Its unique geometry reduces stress and tension on ocular tissue, promoting the creation of a healthier and more stable bleb, for safer, more effective glaucoma surgery.
